About Us

Purrs & Peace is truly a labor of love, driven by compassion, dedication, and a desire to give back to our community, both human and feline. Thank you for supporting our journey and helping us give street cats a second chance at a peaceful, love-filled life.

All About Me

Hi, I’m Katie Elder – founder of Balanced Buddha Gives Back: Purrs & Peace, a heart-driven nonprofit community cat rescue based in Sligo, PA. An Erie native and lifelong animal lover, I’ve always felt a special connection to animals, especially cats. From growing up surrounded by horses, dogs, and cats to decorating my childhood bedroom in cat wallpaper, the “cat lady” life chose me early on.

While my childhood dream of becoming a veterinarian didn’t unfold the way I once imagined, running a home-based cat rescue has become one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I still hope to go back to school to become a veterinary technician to deepen my knowledge and better serve the animals in my care.

Today, my husband Kevin and I operate a small but mighty adoption center right from our home, with hopes of growing into something bigger. Together, we do it all, trap, house, transport, medicate, clean, feed, and love on every single cat that comes through our doors. This isn’t a large team or a formal staff; it’s just one family trying to make a difference, one cat at a time.

Currently, we’re proud parents to ten amazing former street cats: Mopey, Moe, Raymond, Stewart, Archie, Whiskers, Otter, Custard, Dreamsicle, and George. Each one reminds us daily why this mission matters.
